Ahmedabad Nightmare: Air India Flight AI171 Crashes, 274 Lost

Ahmedabad — In a catastrophic aviation tragedy, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, claiming the lives of 274 people. The aircraft, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, lost altitude within minutes of departure from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and crashed into a residential area near the B.J. Medical College campus, setting off a massive fire and causing widespread devastation.

Only one passenger survived the crash — Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British-Indian national — who was seated near an emergency exit and was flung out moments before the aircraft burst into flames. He was rushed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition. The impact on the ground was equally grim, with at least 38 people killed and more than 60 injured as the aircraft struck a student hostel and nearby homes, igniting a blaze that took hours to control.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India has launched a detailed investigation in collaboration with the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch. While the flight data recorder has been recovered, search operations are still underway to locate the cockpit voice recorder, which is expected to provide key details about the moments leading up to the crash. Early reports indicate potential technical failures involving engine thrust, flap positioning, and landing gear deployment

that may have prevented the aircraft from gaining altitude.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on June 13, offering condolences and pledging full government support for the investigation and relief efforts. He met the survivor’s family and described the incident as a “monumental loss to the nation.” International leaders including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III also expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims’ families.

In response to the tragedy, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ordered an immediate safety inspection of all Boeing 787 aircraft in India. Air India, owned by the Tata Group, has grounded several Dreamliners and is assisting with victim identification, family support, and international coordination for deceased foreign nationals. The crash is expected to result in insurance claims exceeding ₹1,000 crore, making it the costliest aviation disaster in Indian history. Legal and diplomatic teams from multiple countries are already preparing compensation frameworks for affected families.

The crash of Flight AI171 marks the first-ever fatal incident involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011 and the deadliest aviation accident in India since 1996. As rescue operations conclude and investigators work tirelessly to determine the exact cause, the nation mourns a tragic loss of life and reflects on the urgent need for stricter aviation safety and accountability.
